Apple has been rumored to be ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack from the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus for awhile now, so obviously we’ve already seen phones not from Apple without the port.
Specifically, earlier this year, a Chinese-based company, LeEco,
announced new smartphones that do not boast a 3.5mm headphone jack at all. While LeEco has made some waves in China, the company is far from a household name in other markets, so the fact that a smaller company was leaving out the port wasn’t necessarily wave making.
However, a much larger company has decided to jump into the fray. Earlier today, the Lenovo-owned Motorola officially announced a pair of new flagship devices, called the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. As is typical for any Android-based flagship smartphone, the specs sheet for both handsets is certainly worth while, but there’s one element that’s worth pointing out.

As AndroidBeat reports, neither one of Motorola’s new smartphones feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. Instead, they both rely on the single USB Type-C port on the bottom edge of the handsets. And, sure enough, there will be a dongle accessory that allows future owners to plug their 3.5mm headphones into the phone.
Motorola’s decision to drop the headphone jack means there’s certainly a bigger focus on dropping that particular port from smartphones, and that the rumors surrounding Apple’s next move are probably accurate. Apple’s expected to ditch the port for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which should be announced sometime in September of this year. If they do, that means headphones will either have to connect through the Lightning port, use an adapter, or go wireless.
